Rockvale is situated in the east Burren, on the edge of the beautiful Burren National Park. From the studio and garden, there are magnificent views over Turlough Hill to the north and Bunnakippaun Wood and Nature Reserve to the south. The Studio is easily accessible from main routes, situated on the R460 from south Galway to the west coast, and is only ten minutes by car from Gort and the M18 and 30 minutes from Ennis. Buses to Gort from Limerick and Galway are frequent and transport can be arranged from Gort.
The wooden building was built in 2012 as Alan’s art studio, but it was always Alan and Terri’s ambition to use it as a teaching centre. Alan began teaching art classes there in the autumn of 2014, and in autumn 2015, having finished her PhD in Irish history, Terri has joined him, offering courses in local history as well as wildlife gardening.
In the comfortable surroundings of the Studio, set in its beautiful gardens, small classes of students will learn through a hands-on approach to art, history and gardening in tune with the natural world. Saturday courses will include a delicious home-cooked lunch using ingredients in season from the vegetable garden, as well as tea and coffee.
The Studio is wheelchair-accessible, though there is a small step to the toilet, situated in the main house. Visitors should be aware that, in common with all gardens, there may be slippery patches, and should exercise caution when exploring the garden and pond area.
